Doc Cheng's® Bar

The "Doc Cheng's® Bar" with its 30 seats is integrated into the restaurant Doc Cheng's® allowing a view directly onto beautiful wooden panels, into the elegant and opulent, but cosy atmosphere, in which smoking is permitted.

Also at the "Doc Cheng's® Bar", the atmosphere and fixtures are reminders of the foregone times of Shanghai in the 1920s. Numerous black and white photographs from Doc Cheng's® own Asian and European travels decorate the panelled walls. Brass lamps with red fabric shades cast warm light, producing a comfortable atmosphere between the palms, allowing guests to relax in lush sea grass armchairs. This is probably the reason why the "Doc Cheng's® Bar" has already been voted best "Trend bar of the year 1999" in the hotel bar category, by a jury of seven staff members of the "The Bar", a specialist magazine. In 2001, the "Doc Cheng's® Bar" has not only been awarded best Fusion concept by "Fizzz", the trend magazine out of 200 applicants from all over Germany, but also scored first when the famous men's magazine "GQ" voted for the best bar concept of the year. And then, previous Head Barkeeper Enrico Wilhelm succeeded at the "Null-Promille-Cup 2001, the first national competition for alcohol-free cocktails, against 170 colleagues.

Apparently, the old Doc Cheng also preferred to drink cocktails. He would therefore have felt very much at home at the "Doc Cheng's® Bar", where cocktails are prepared to be real pieces of art. Cocktails based on Sake, and long drinks spiced with ginger, curry and lemon grass are just some of the drinks made famous by Doc Cheng's®.

In total, 15 exotic cocktails have been created from standard ones, from classical cocktails innovative new drinks were made, sometimes only using little tricks.

The current favourite is an Asiatic "Bloody Mary" flavoured with Wasabi (green Japanese horse radish) and red chilli sauce. Of course, the famous Singapore Sling is also mixed at the "Doc Cheng's® Bar", a drink that has been created at the famous Raffles "parent" hotel, probably already in 1915, and has nowadays advanced to be almost the national drink of the small city state.

Another original is "Doc Cheng's® restorative tonic", a bittersweet elixir of apple-juice, ginseng, ginger and honey. Concocted according to a secret family recipe, and served in a special handmade bottle, this special Asian potion is meant to mobilise energy reserves and awaken new strengths.

It is a perfect drink with a light lunch menu, especially for those who have to drive afterwards. Alcohol-free drinks, whether exotic or classical, à la carte or individual, are served to fit exactly our guest's preferences.

Besides the exotic and classical cocktails, our bar is always willing to innovate and offers 36 different sorts of beer, even from Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. Of course, the well-stocked wine cellar of the restaurant Doc Cheng's® is also available to visitors of the bar, which boasts a total of 1.400 exquisite wines from 18 countries and 393 years. The selection also includes exquisite wines from New Foundland, South Africa, Chile, China and California. The "Doc Cheng's® Bar" also disposes of a large choice of Rum, Malt Whiskey and Fruit Schnapps. From its own humdor, cigars and cigarillos are offered to the smokers' delight.

The Doc Cheng's® Bar is in any case said to be one of the trendiest places to be at in Hamburg. It has certainly achieved to move out of the shade of fame of the Restaurant Doc Cheng's® itself, not only through the numerous awards it has already obtained in its young history.
